When to Pay Airline Bag Fees (2026): At Booking, at the Airport or at the Gate

On most US airlines, paying for bags earlier costs less than waiting for the airport lobby or gate. The pattern: booking or managing online costs less than the airport counter, which costs less than the gate, when the airline publishes a fee ladder. Majors often show a small prepaid or online discount (or a flat table). Budget airlines price by route and timing, so check each airline’s calculator rather than a fixed table from a blog. Confirm your ticket date and fare before you pay.

Fee amounts on this page match the official airline sources linked below and each airline’s BagRule fees page. Where the table says to use the airline calculator, check the price on the airline’s site. Prices can change by route and when you buy.

Dollar amounts appear only when the airline publishes them. “Same published price” means the official table does not list separate prepaid and airport prices. Rows that vary by route have no single nationwide price for the 1st or 2nd bag.

American

• When you pay: Prepaying online or in the app costs less than the airport for the 1st and 2nd bag in the core domestic and short-haul region (about $5 less online).
• Published fees (Main Cabin, tickets bought on or after April 9, 2026): 1st bag $45 online or $50 at the airport; 2nd bag $55 online or $60 at the airport; 3rd bag and later $200.
• Basic Economy compared with Main (checked bags only): tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026 often pay $5 more than Main for the 1st and 2nd bag (prepaid and at the airport).
• Cabin: Basic still includes a free carry-on and personal item; boarding in Group 9 means bin space may run out, but there is no gate penalty fee. American Eagle valet checks and bin-full checks: described as free. American and Delta don’t publish a separate carry-on “gate penalty” fee when an allowed cabin bag is valet or planeside checked for space. Don’t assume one.

Delta

• When you pay: The official domestic table shows one amount each for the 1st and 2nd bag (online, Fly Delta, kiosk, and airport). If the airline’s official table shows one amount for online and airport, treat it as one published price. Don’t assume a prepaid discount.
• Published fees: domestic Main and Comfort 1st bag $45, 2nd $55; 3rd bag and later $200.
• Cabin: Basic includes a free carry-on; when bins are limited, bags may be gate-checked free. Delta Connection flights with 50 seats or fewer: personal item only on board; larger bags go free as Gate Claim or Planeside.

United

• When you pay: Prepaid (at least 24 hours out) is cheapest, then the standard airport counter price, then the gate. The clearest published three-step fee ladder among major airlines for Basic Economy forced bag checks.
• Published fees (domestic example): 1st bag $45 prepaid or $50 standard; 2nd bag $55 or $60; 3rd bag and later $200.
• Basic Economy (most domestic, tickets bought on or after April 3, 2026): only a personal item is free; if you bring a full carry-on or your bag doesn’t fit under the seat, it costs about $45 prepaid, $50 at the airport counter or $75 at the gate (a $25 handling fee plus the checked bag fee). Tickets bought before April 3, 2026: $35 prepaid, $40 at the counter, $65 at the gate. $65 is not the current default.

Southwest

• When you pay: Published mainland amounts are the same at digital check-in, kiosk, or counter (no prepaid discount like American’s or United’s is listed). Still add bags in advance so price and fare product are clear before you reach the counter.
• Published fees (mainland, booked on or after April 9, 2026): Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred $45 for the 1st bag, $55 for the 2nd; Choice Extra 2 free; 3rd bag and later $150.
• Cabin: Carry-on and personal item free on all fares.

Alaska

• When you pay: For North America tickets bought on or after April 10, 2026, the table is a flat $45, $55 and $200 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd bag (no prepaid discount listed). Pay at online check-in, bag tag station, or counter (same published amount). Older tickets may still show the earlier $35 prepaid price.
• Interisland: 1st bag $30, 2nd $40 (published).
• Cabin: Free carry-on and personal item, including Saver.

JetBlue

• When you pay: A clear middle step: prepaying more than 24 hours out costs less than paying within 24 hours or at check-in; peak dates cost more than off-peak.
• Published fees (within the US, Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada), 1st and 2nd bag: prepaid off-peak $45 and $59; off-peak within 24 hours $49 and $69; prepaid peak $49 and $69; peak within 24 hours $59 and $79; 3rd bag $200.
• Cabin: Free carry-on and personal item on all current fares, including Main Base.

Frontier

• When you pay: Booking online is cheapest, then the airport, then the gate. Amounts vary by route and date. Use the Bag Price Checker; there is no fixed nationwide table for the 1st and 2nd bag.
• Fixed published fees: overweight and oversize charges only (full details on our Frontier baggage fees page); standard checked bag up to 62 linear inches and 40 lb.
• Fare note: Carry-on costs extra on Basic and Standard; included on Economy, Premium and Business (current bundle names, not the older WORKS and PERKS).

Allegiant

• Carry-on: Optional Services range of $10 to $75, by route and when added. Allegiant prices bags by route and travel date, so check the exact price when you book or manage your trip.
• Checked: priced by route, for each flight. No fixed nationwide price for the 1st or 2nd bag. Published extra charges: overweight $50 (51 to 70 lb) or $75 (71 to 99 lb), oversize $75; no bag over 99 lb accepted.

Hawaiian

• When you pay: For North America tickets bought on or after April 10, 2026, the table is a flat $45, $55 and $200 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd bag (no prepaid discount listed). Interisland 1st bag $30, 2nd $40. Check before you reach the counter (ticket date, and North America or interisland).

Sun Country

• When you pay: Online (booking, My Trips or online check-in) is cheapest, then the ticket counter, then the gate. Buying at the gate uses airport bag fees plus a $10 Gate Handling Fee.

Avelo

• Published ranges (new reservations): carry-on from $52 to $75; checked from $47 to $75 (not a price list by route).

Breeze

• When you pay: Price your bags on the website or app at booking (or in My Trips). The airport or Guest Empowerment adds $75 per bag, usually much more than the app price.
• Fare note: No Flex and Flex include a personal item only unless you buy bags; Nice, Nicer and Nicest include a carry-on (and the checked bags stated for the fare).

When paying earlier helps

• The airline publishes a lower prepaid or online price than at the airport (American about $5 less on the 1st and 2nd bag; United prepaid compared with standard; JetBlue more than 24 hours out compared with within 24 hours).
• You are on United Basic Economy (most domestic): a prepaid check (about $45) costs less than the counter (about $50) and especially the gate (about $75) if you need a full carry-on checked (tickets bought on or after April 3, 2026).
• You fly a budget airline (Frontier, Allegiant, Sun Country, Avelo, Breeze): prices set by route and timing climb toward the airport and gate. Add bags at booking or the earliest manage path, and confirm with the airline calculator.
• Your ticket purchase or change date sets which fee table applies (all in 2026: American April 9 and Basic Economy May 18; United April 3; Alaska and Hawaiian April 10; Southwest April 9; Frontier overweight April 4). Changing the ticket can move you onto a newer, higher table.

When paying early may not change the price

• Delta domestic published table: the same $45 and $55 in every channel (no separate prepaid price listed, so don’t count on savings).
• Southwest, Alaska and Hawaiian (for Alaska and Hawaiian, North America tickets bought on or after April 10, 2026): published amounts are the same at online check-in and at the counter. Paying early still helps you avoid surprises, even without a published discount.

Basic Economy compared with Main (only where the fee differs and is published)

• American: Cabin bags free on Basic Economy and Main. Basic Economy checked bags (tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026) often cost $5 more than Main for the 1st and 2nd bag.
• United: Most domestic Basic Economy fares include a personal item only; Main and Economy usually include a free carry-on. A Basic Economy carry-on that must be checked costs $45 prepaid, $50 at the counter or $75 at the gate (tickets bought on or after April 3, 2026).
• Delta, Southwest, Alaska, Hawaiian and JetBlue: A free carry-on is included on the basic and saver fares covered on our pages for these airlines (including JetBlue Main Base and similar fares). Full bins are a space risk, not a separate cabin-bag fee. Checked-bag dollars follow each airline’s own table.
• Frontier, Allegiant, Sun Country, Avelo and Breeze: The base fare often includes a personal item only (overhead bags cost extra). Here “Basic Economy compared with Main” means whether the fare or bundle includes bags. For Frontier, Allegiant, Sun Country, Avelo, and Breeze, use each airline’s calculator or booking path. BagRule doesn’t show a flat nationwide table for the 1st and 2nd bag when the airline prices by route and timing.

1. Confirm fare bags. Open your confirmation: Does this fare already include a carry-on, a checked bag or both? (United Basic Economy: personal item only; budget airline base fares: personal item only; Southwest Choice Extra: 2 free; Breeze Nice, Nicer and Nicest include bags; American and Delta Basic Economy still include free cabin bags.)
2. Check the price online or in your booking now. Before you join the counter line, open the airline site or app (or the Bag Price Checker, Explore Bag Prices or bag calculator). Note prepaid, airport or gate for your ticket date and route.
3. Pay before the counter or gate if needed. If you still need bags and the price is higher at the counter or gate, pay in manage travel or prepay before airport check-in or boarding. On United Basic Economy, do not wait for a “free” gate-check. That path is paid on most domestic routes.

1. Ticket date first. Screenshot or note the purchase or change date. Many 2026 fee tables depend on that date.
2. Travel with a personal item only when bag fees don’t add up: a free under-seat bag avoids the fees entirely on budget airline base fares and United Basic Economy.
3. United Basic Economy travelers: if you need overhead space, prepay to check the bag (about $45) rather than hoping for a free planeside check (about $75 at the gate on new tickets).
4. Budget airlines: add bags at booking and check the calculator again before the airport. The counter and gate are often the expensive steps (Sun Country adds a $10 gate handling fee; Breeze adds $75 per bag at the airport). Allegiant prices bags by route and travel date, so check the exact price when you book or manage your trip.
5. Stay within standard weight and size so you don’t pay overweight or oversize fees on top of the bag fee (each airline’s fees page lists its published charges).
