Delta Baggage Fees (2026)

How much to check a bag on Delta: $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second, each way, on domestic U.S. flights, for tickets bought on or after April 8, 2026 (earlier tickets pay $35 and $45). A third bag is $200, and each bag must stay at 50 lb (23 kg) or less and within 62 linear inches (157 cm) to avoid overweight and oversize fees.

Prices are for Delta Main and Delta Comfort on domestic flights, with no Medallion status, Delta SkyMiles American Express card or active military waiver. Delta charges each way.

Solo traveler, carry-on only: $0. One carry-on and one personal item are free.

Round trip with 1 checked bag: $45 out plus $45 back makes $90.

Family of four, 2 checked bags, round trip: if two people each check one bag, that's 2 bags at $45, or $90 each way, so $180 for the trip. If one person checks both, it's $45 plus $55, or $100 each way, so $200. Splitting the bags saves $20.

Fees are in US dollars (Canadian dollars or euros when you depart from Canada or Europe), per passenger, each way. They apply to Delta Main (including Basic) and Delta Comfort when no Medallion, Delta SkyMiles American Express or active military waiver applies.

Online or at the airport

Delta lists one price. You add and pay for bags during the 24-hour check-in window on delta.com, in the Fly Delta app or at an airport kiosk. Delta's site doesn't show a cheaper prepaid rate. At most domestic airports, SkyMiles members can also pay standard bag fees with miles, but not excess or overweight fees.

Overweight and oversize: fees stack

Delta charges a separate fee for each limit a bag breaks: one for the extra piece, one for weight and one for size. On a domestic trip, a first bag that's 60 lb and 70 linear inches costs $45 plus $100 plus $200, so $345 each way. Bags of 100 lb or more, or over 80 linear inches, aren't accepted as checked bags.

International routes:

• Between the Americas and Europe or North Africa, overweight (51 to 70 lb) is 100 US dollars, 120 Canadian dollars or 85 euros, and bags over 70 lb aren't accepted.
• Oversize on the same routes is 300 US dollars, 345 Canadian dollars or 250 euros.
• Bags over 70 lb aren't accepted to or from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa or the UAE either.

Delta Main Basic (Basic Economy) bags

• Free: 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item. If the bins fill up, your carry-on may be checked at the gate at no charge.
• Not free: checked bags on all domestic routes and select international routes. Domestic prices are the same: $45 for the first bag and $55 for the second.
• Status and card perks still count: Free bags for Medallion members and Delta SkyMiles American Express cardholders apply to Delta Main, including Basic fares, as the table shows.

• Delta prices bags each way. A round trip with one bag is two charges, not one.
• The second bag costs more than the first. A family that piles everything into one traveler's allowance pays $55 for that second bag when another traveler's first bag would be $45.
• Weight and size fees stack. A first bag that is both 51 to 70 lb and 63 to 80 linear inches pays the $45 bag fee plus $100 plus $200, which comes to $345 each way.
• The 62 inch limit counts length, width and height together, wheels and handles included. Big hard shell cases often go over without looking huge.
• A third bag is $200, more than the first two put together.
• Your card perk only works when the trip is booked the way the card terms ask. Check the terms before you count on a free bag.

1. Weigh your bag at home. A cheap luggage scale costs less than one overweight charge.
2. Spread bags across your group so everyone uses their cheaper first bag before anyone pays for a second.
3. If you fly Delta a few times a year, compare the yearly cost of an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card with what you pay in bag fees.
4. Pack for the cabin on short trips. A carry-on and personal item cost nothing.
5. Move heavy things like shoes and toiletries into your carry-on if your checked bag is near 50 lb.
6. Military travelers should check Delta's military allowance before paying anything.
