Airline Bag Costs: Worked Examples for Real Trips
A fare that looks like a bargain on the search page can end up costing more than the "expensive" one once you add bags. The only way to know is to do the math for your own trip. This guide does that math for four common trips, line by line, so you can see where the money goes.
Why the fare is only part of the price
Bag fees are charged per bag, per person and per flight direction. A $45 fee sounds small until you multiply it by two travelers and two flights. On some fares a carry-on is included, on others it costs extra, and on United Basic Economy it is usually not allowed on most routes. The cheapest ticket is only the cheapest trip if your bags fit what it includes.
How we priced these trips
- We used only fixed fees that airlines publish on their own pages, linked in the fee table and the sources list below.
- Prices are one way unless the example says round trip.
- Where an airline prices bags by route or does not post a fixed figure, we say Not published rather than guess. Frontier, Allegiant's checked bags, Breeze's online prices, Sun Country and United's standard Economy checked bags all fall into this group. Follow the links to get your quote.
- Where an airline posts a range, we show the low end and the high end.
- We assume no credit card, elite status or military benefit. Those can bring the total to $0, covered in our guide to avoiding bag fees.
Trip 1: solo weekend, personal item only
This is the cheap trip done right. If everything fits in one bag under the seat, every airline in this guide charges $0 for bags on this trip. That includes Frontier, Allegiant, Avelo, Breeze and Sun Country, where the personal item is free on the cheapest fare. The catch is size. A personal item on United is limited to 17 x 10 x 9 inches, and on Frontier to 18 x 14 x 8 inches. Test your packed bag with our gate sizer guide before you count on a $0 trip.
Trip 2: solo weekend with a carry-on
Now add a roller bag for the overhead bin. Round trip, one traveler:
- Avelo: 2 x $52 is $104 at the low end, and 2 x $75 is $150 at the high end.
- Allegiant: 2 x $10 is $20 at the low end, and 2 x $75 is $150 at the high end.
- United Basic Economy, roller taken to the gate: 2 x $75 is $150. Checked in the lobby instead, it is 2 x $50, which is $100. Prepaid, it is 2 x $45, which is $90.
- Delta, American, Southwest and Alaska: $0, because a carry-on is included.
- Frontier and Breeze: Not published. Both price carry-ons by route, so check Frontier and Breeze for your dates.
The lesson: on United Basic Economy, waiting until the gate costs $60 more for the round trip. Paying $75 at the gate on each of two flights comes to $150, while prepaying $45 on each of two flights comes to $90, and $150 minus $90 is $60.
Trip 3: couple, one week, one checked bag each
Two people, two flights, one first checked bag each. The formula is 2 people x 2 flights x first bag fee.
- Delta: 2 x 2 x $45 is $180.
- American Main Cabin, paid online: 2 x 2 x $45 is $180. At the airport: 2 x 2 x $50 is $200.
- American Basic Economy, paid online: 2 x 2 x $50 is $200. At the airport: 2 x 2 x $55 is $220.
- Southwest: 2 x 2 x $45 is $180.
- JetBlue off peak, added early: 2 x 2 x $45 is $180. Peak: 2 x 2 x $49 is $196.
- Alaska: 2 x 2 x $35 is $140.
- Avelo: 2 x 2 x $47 is $188 at the low end, and 2 x 2 x $75 is $300 at the high end.
Between the cheapest and the most expensive published option for the same two bags, the gap is 300 minus 140, which is $160.
Trip 4: family of four, two checked bags each way
A family of four shares two checked bags, so each direction has one first bag and one second bag.
- Delta: $45 plus $55 is $100 each way, and 2 x $100 is $200 round trip.
- Southwest: $45 plus $55 is $100 each way, so $200 round trip.
- Alaska: $35 plus $45 is $80 each way, so $160 round trip.
- American Main Cabin, paid online: $45 plus $55 is $100 each way, so $200 round trip.
Packing four people into two shared bags rather than four keeps the second bag fee to one per direction. Strollers and car seats often travel free, see our stroller and car seat guide.

Online, at the counter or at the gate: what timing changes
When you pay matters almost as much as which airline you pick.
- American charges $5 less per bag online than at the airport on both Main Cabin and Basic Economy.
- JetBlue prices its listed fees for bags added more than 24 hours before departure.
- Avelo says its bag prices are lowest when added during the first booking.
- United Basic Economy runs from $45 prepaid to $50 in the lobby to $75 at the gate.
- Breeze charges $75 per bag when airport staff add it. One bag added that way costs 2 x $75, which is $150, round trip.
Our guide on when to pay airline bag fees goes deeper on timing.
Airlines that price bags by route, and how to get your exact quote
Some airlines do not publish one fixed bag price. Frontier uses its Bag Price Checker (Frontier optional services). Allegiant prices by route (Allegiant fees). Breeze quotes online by route (Breeze bag pricing). Sun Country does not post a fixed figure (Sun Country booking guide). United's standard Economy checked bag price varies by route and purchase date, and United offers a bag calculator (United checked bags).
To get your number:
- Open the airline's official bag page from the links above.
- Enter your exact route and travel dates.
- Note the price for adding the bag now, during booking.
- Multiply by travelers and by flight directions.
- Add that total to the fare before comparing airlines.

FAQ
- Is the cheap airline still cheaper once I add bags?
- Sometimes, but not always. Add the bag cost for every traveler and both directions to the fare before you compare. A carry-on on Avelo costs $104 to $150 round trip, while Delta, American, Southwest and Alaska include one on standard fares.
- Is it cheaper to pay for bags online or at the airport?
- Usually online. American charges $5 less per bag online, Avelo is lowest when bags are added during the first booking, and United Basic Economy goes from $45 prepaid to $75 at the gate.
- Do bag fees apply each way or once per trip?
- Each way. Bag fees are charged per bag, per person, per flight direction, so a round trip doubles the cost.
- Why can't I find a fixed bag price on some airlines?
- Some airlines price bags by route and date. Frontier, Allegiant, Breeze online and Sun Country do not publish a fixed figure, so use the price tool on each airline's official page for your exact trip.
- Is it cheaper to check one big bag or two smaller ones?
- One bag is usually cheaper, since second bags cost more, for example $55 on Delta against $45 for the first. Just keep that one bag at or under 50 pounds and 62 linear inches to avoid overweight or oversize fees.
- If I'm forced to check my carry-on at the gate, do I pay?
- It depends on your fare. On United Basic Economy, a bag taken to the gate costs $75. On fares that include a carry-on, rules vary by airline. American, for example, valets larger carry-ons on regional planes at no charge. Check your airline's page before you fly.
