Can I bring a carry-on on a regional jet?

What’s the difference between valet, planeside, and a normal gate-check?

Valet (American Eagle wording): tagged at the gate, typically returned on the jetbridge, free on many Eagle aircraft (not ERJ-175). Is United Express the same as mainline for cabin bags?

Not always. On some United Express flights, including some CommutAir operations, only a personal item may be allowed onboard even outside Basic Economy. Other Express carriers may allow a carry-on but have limited bin space; pickup may be jetbridge or claim. Basic Economy cabin bag rules still apply on top of aircraft limits: most domestic Basic Economy fares remain personal item only, and checking a full carry-on your fare doesn’t include is not a free planeside courtesy.

If Delta gate-checks my Basic Economy carry-on on a Connection flight, do I pay?

Delta Basic includes a complimentary carry-on. When overhead is limited, the bag may be gate-checked free. On Connection jets with 50 seats or fewer, only the personal item boards; larger bags get free Gate Claim or Planeside tags. That is space handling, not a cabin-bag fee. Read the aircraft, not just the brand. Your confirmation may say American, Delta or United while the plane is American Eagle, Delta Connection or United Express. Look for operator or equipment notes (CommutAir, ERJ-175, seat count). Pack a true personal item you can keep if the spinner is tagged.
Know what is free or paid before you reach the jetbridge. American Eagle valet checks and planeside checks on Delta Connection flights with 50 seats or fewer are typically free when published. United Basic Economy (most domestic) still pays if you check a full carry-on. Keep medicines, chargers and documents in the under-seat bag.
