Read the fare, not the word “Basic.” Open your confirmation: Does this ticket include a free overhead carry-on, or only a personal item? United BE (most domestic) and ULCC base fares are the usual traps; AA / DL / AS Saver / HA Saver / JetBlue Main Base / SWA Basic still include free overhead.
Measure the bag that is actually free. Personal-item-only tickets: pack a true under-seat bag (use each airline’s published inches when they exist — United 9 × 10 × 17; AA / Frontier 18 × 14 × 8; JetBlue 17 × 13 × 8; etc.). Soft expanders that fail under-seat fit can trigger a paid check on United BE.
