- Read the fare, not the word “Basic.” Open your confirmation: Does this ticket include a free overhead carry-on, or only a personal item? United Basic Economy (most domestic) and budget airline base fares are where travelers usually get caught; American, Delta, Alaska Saver, Hawaiian Saver, JetBlue Main Base and Southwest Basic still include a free overhead bag.
- Measure the bag that is actually free. Personal item only tickets: pack a true under-seat bag (use each airline’s published size in inches when there is one: United 9 × 10 × 17; American and Frontier 18 × 14 × 8; JetBlue 17 × 13 × 8; and so on). Soft expandable bags that don’t fit under the seat can mean a paid check on United Basic Economy.
- If you must check, pay earlier. On United Basic Economy (tickets bought on or after April 3, 2026), prepaying about $45 costs less than about $50 at the counter or about $75 at the gate. On budget airlines, add an overhead bag online before the airport when the calculator shows a lower price. Full flights do not waive United Basic Economy cabin bag fees.
Tips
- Compare cabin rights before sorting by airfare. A cheaper United Basic Economy ticket can cost more once you need overhead space than a Delta Basic ticket that already includes it.
- No cabin-bag fee, only a bin-space risk, on American, Delta, Alaska Saver, Hawaiian Saver, JetBlue Main Base and Southwest; bins can fill before late boarders get on, so keep medications and chargers in the personal item.
- United Basic Economy exceptions depend on the route (South America, across the Atlantic or across the Pacific), not on a friendly gate agent. Plan to pay rather than count on a free courtesy check.
- Budget airlines’ “larger” published carry-on sizes (for example, Frontier 24 × 16 × 10) still usually mean a paid overhead bag on base fares.

- It depends on the airline. American and Delta Basic include a free overhead carry-on and personal item. - Is United Basic Economy personal-item only?
- Yes on most domestic and short-haul routes. A free Basic Economy carry-on applies on itineraries to South America, across the Atlantic, or across the Pacific (and to Canada if the ticket was bought before May 28, 2025; check on united.com). Otherwise plan under-seat only, or pay to check.
- What happens if I bring a full carry-on on United Basic Economy?
- Expect to check it. For tickets purchased on or after April 3, 2026, typical amounts are about $45 prepaid, $50 at the airport counter, or $75 at the gate (also described as a $25 handling fee plus the checked bag fee). This is not a free full-flight courtesy check. Tickets bought before April 3, 2026 may still show lower earlier fees; $65 is not the current gate fee for new tickets.
- Does American or Delta Basic Economy charge for carry-on?
- No. Both include a complimentary carry-on and personal item. American Basic typically boards Group 9 (bins may be full). Delta may gate-check free if bins are limited; on Connection jets with 50 seats or fewer, only the personal item boards and larger bags get free Planeside or Gate Claim tags.
- Does JetBlue Main Base (Blue Basic) include a carry-on?
- Yes. Main Base is JetBlue’s current name for its most restricted fare (Blue Basic on older bookings). Free carry-on and personal item. That differs from United Basic Economy on most domestic routes.
- Do Alaska Saver and Hawaiian Saver include a free carry-on?
- Yes on both. Same free carry-on and personal item as Main. Alaska Saver boards in Group F (bin space may run out). Hawaiian Saver has its own boarding and seat rules; bag rights still match Main.
