Qantas Economy includes checked bags, Red eDeal and Flex too. Domestic airport excess is 161 Australian dollars a piece, plus 64 Australian dollars if heavy.

Red eDeal and Flex: Qantas Economy includes checked baggage. What you pay for is extra pieces or kg, or heavy pieces, not the first Economy bag on a normal Qantas ticket.

Gotchas

  • First Economy bag is included on Qantas. Red eDeal is not a bagless fare.

  • Domestic: 161 Australian dollars is the airport excess fee per extra piece, not the online prepaid rate.

  • A domestic heavy charge of 64 Australian dollars applies over 23 kg when that is your allowance threshold. Silver’s 1 × 32 kg piece may avoid heavy depending on the ticketed allowance; confirm your piece weight in Manage booking.

  • Americas routes use pieces; the rest of the world uses weight. Pack differently for each.

  • 32 kg absolute max per piece.

  • Dash 8 and island flights have smaller allowances. Christmas Island and Cocos Islands: from September 1, 2026, extra baggage can only be bought at the airport on arrival; for bookings made or changed on or after October 1, 2026, the allowance is one 23kg piece, plus one more 23kg piece that you can buy only at the airport.

  • Prepaid prices in Australian dollars often appear only in Manage booking. Use the published airport fees or current quotes rather than a flat figure in Australian dollars that is not on the page.

  • The US page notes higher additional-baggage prices from June 9, 2026. Check quotes again.

  • A domestic flight on the same ticket as an international one usually takes the international checked allowance.

  • The carry-on section of the US allowances and fees page is older. Use that page for fees, not as the main source for carry-on size.

  • Classic Flight Reward partner tickets may exclude checked bags on some partners; confirm carriers on your reward booking.

Can I buy an extra bag on Qantas before the airport?
Yes. Pre-purchase at booking or in Manage booking up to 3 hours before departure (Qantas-operated flights, conditions apply). Up to five extra pieces (domestic and Americas routes) or extra weight in set steps (rest of world).

What if my bag is over 23 kg on Qantas?
No piece may exceed 32 kg. On domestic Australian flights, a heavy charge of 64 Australian dollars may apply for pieces over 23 kg when that is your allowance limit. On Americas itineraries, Qantas publishes no heavy charge up to 32 kg for extra pieces on its baggage pages.

Is Qantas baggage allowance counted by pieces or by weight?
Both, by route. Domestic Australia and North and South America use pieces (with a kg limit per piece). International outside the Americas uses a total weight allowance.
