Qantas overhead bags can be 56 × 36 × 23 cm. Domestic adds an underseat bag and personal item (14 kg), and international Economy adds a personal item (7 kg).

Qantas measures carry-on height × width × depth including wheels and handles when packed away.

Bag types (all routes):

  • Overhead bag (for example, a small wheelie): 56 cm (22 in) high, 36 cm (14 in) wide and 23 cm (9 in) deep
  • Underseat bag (for example, a small duffle, backpack or large handbag): 34 cm (13 in) high, 48 cm (18 in) wide and 23 cm (9 in) deep
  • Personal item (under the seat in front): 1 small item. Official examples: 1 crossbody bag, 1 small handbag, or 1 laptop in a slim bag. No centimeter limit is printed on the carry-on page; check qantas.com in case your itinerary page adds a size. A laptop in a large laptop bag counts as carry-on, not the personal item.
  • Non-rigid garment bag: 114 × 60 × 11 cm (44 × 23 × 4 in); counts toward carry-on allowance.

Domestic (Australia): Economy and Business

1 overhead bag, 1 underseat bag and 1 personal item. Total weight 14 kg (30 lb), max 10 kg (22 lb) per item.

Dash 8 (QantasLink Q400): 1 overhead bag and 1 personal item only; 7 kg (15 lb) max. Small wheelies often do not fit overhead; they may be collected at boarding and returned on arrival.

No “personal item only” fare is published for mainline Qantas Economy on Qantas’s carry-on page. Official pages do not list a separate Red eDeal gate fee for cabin bags; carry-on follows cabin and route.

Gotchas

  • International Economy is not domestic. International Economy is an overhead bag and personal item, 7 kg, with no underseat bag. Domestic Economy gets three pieces and 14 kg.

  • Underseat bag is not the personal item. Underseat has published 34 × 48 × 23 cm. Personal item has examples only, no cm.

  • India departures: personal item not allowed; overhead only.

  • Dash 8: 7 kg; small wheelies are often collected at the gate; no underseat piece.

  • Weight is real: domestic and premium cabins allow 10 kg per item and 14 kg total; international Economy 7 kg total.

  • Wheels and handles count in the 56 × 36 × 23 cm and 34 × 48 × 23 cm measurements.

  • Laptop: a slim bag counts as the personal item; a large laptop bag counts as a carry-on piece.

  • Power banks (from December 15, 2025): up to two (160 Wh or less each) in carry-on; you cannot use or charge them onboard.

  • Jetstar booked through Qantas has different carry-on rules (and a change from February 2, 2027). Use Jetstar’s own sizes when that applies.

  • An older US allowances and fees page still shows past carry-on wording of 45 linear inches and 7 kg. Use Qantas’s carry-on baggage page (Australian and US sites) for sizes, and the fees page for fees only, until Qantas updates it.

Traveler caution: Measure including wheels and handles. On international Economy keep total cabin weight at or under 7 kg. Confirm on qantas.com for your exact itinerary (Dash 8, India, Jetstar, partners).

Does Qantas Red eDeal include a carry-on bag?
Yes. Red eDeal is Economy, so you get the Economy carry-on for your route: domestic overhead bag, underseat bag and personal item at 14 kg; international Economy overhead bag and personal item at 7 kg. Official pages do not sell a separate “buy trolley” product for Red eDeal or Flex.

Does Qantas allow a free personal item plus a carry-on?
Usually yes, except flights departing India (overhead only) and some aircraft or partner limits. Domestic and most international cabins include a personal item in addition to the overhead (and underseat when the cabin allows it).

Is there a Qantas carry-on weight limit?

What if my Qantas bag is too big at the gate?

Do Flex fares get a bigger carry-on than Red eDeal?
No published size or weight difference for carry-on between Red eDeal and Flex on Qantas’s pages. Both follow Economy cabin rules for the route. Premium Economy, Business and First add the underseat piece and higher weight on international flights.
